Marchfeldkanal – this is the name of a new cycling trail built between Bratislava and Vienna. the trail is 61 kilometers long. it has been renovated for 3 years.

A Family Friendly Trail

The Bicycle Bridge of Freedom

Marchfeldkanal begins at Schloss Hof castle (from Bratislava you can reach it via the Bicycle Bridge of Freedom, Devinska Nova Ves). it leads down to Langenzersdorf, outskirts of Vienna. However, if you do not dare to ride the full 61 kilometers, you can practically reach the public transport anywhere. the route is not difficult. it leads mostly to lowland areas. so it is not about reaching the levels of the up-to-date results of Giro d'Italia. This is only to make a pleasant and less demanding trip. This is why families with children will enjoy the trip particularly. in addition, you can also find e-bike rentals along the way and re-charge stations  which could make your family trip a little easier.

Buy Home-Grown Fruits and Vegetables

The new route linking the two countries is split into several sections in mostly agricultural regions. on Austrian territory, fruit and vegetable plantations cover approximately 7 000 hectares. you can make use of this because most of local growers sell part of their crop to bikers who travel across Marchfeldkanal. the exact locations where you can find the home-grown fruit and vegetable stores can be found in the bike-route map issued by Donau Niederösterreich. Moreover, you can find out what sights you can visit and where are local restaurants and accommodation facilities. the facilities that offer their services to cyclists have additionally received special training, which makes most of them "bike friendly".

1,200 kilometers of quality bicycle trails

In Lower Austria, recreational cycling has a long history. Thirty years ago, the first bike trail was built here and since then new have been added. Thanks to this, you can now enjoy over 1 200 kilometers of regularly maintained bike trails. in addition to their high quality surface, signs along them have been constantly updated road signs and information boards. Around half a million cyclists travel on these trails each year. Every one in ten biker chooses the route from Passau to Vienna.  Maintaining these routes is also in the interest of the state, because the annual yield in the country increases by approximately 5 million euros. Only on the Danube trail, about 2 000 bikes ride every day. Small businesses, guest houses and some local attraction survive thanks to this.
