Austria, Skiing in the Alps IV.: Unique Resort of Hintertux

The glacier stretches between 1500 and 3250 meters so you can ski there on any day of the year! the place of permanent snow is only 550 kilometers from Prague. Therefore, Czechs are often guests here.

Hintertux ski village is situated at the end of  Zillertal valley. Up from there only continue only chair lifts. There couple of high-capacity car parks. Therefore, it is comfortable if you commute from local villages of Lanersbach or Tux. Two parallel chair lifts will take you up (to 2 100 m) where you get the view of the greatest glacier in Austria. the beautiful view is also up from the summit of Gefrorene Wand. the platform is at altitude of 3250 meters. the summits of the Tux Alps touch the clouds every day.

Over 80 kilometers of ski slopes are at the resort. There are all difficulties, therefore, every skier should be satisfied. There are mostly red slopes in case you don’t prefer something different take a chair lift up Grosser Kaserer with its wide blue ski slopes.

During the season (from the beginning of December to April) shuttle service operates here. it connects the resort with other winter resorts in Zillertal valley. Altogether they are called Zillertal 3 000 and include Rastkogel, Penken, Eggalm and Ahorn.

In case you won’t be able to go skiing during the season don’t worry about it. Here you can do this sport even in the summer. Ski slopes end at Fernerhaus restaurant. Snow above it is mostly slushy. Still, it is great experience to take off your skis and enjoy beautiful waterfall on beautiful summer day. the waterfall is at the chair lift’s bottom station). People who came here to camp will appreciate glacier river. it is great to have a swim after skiing. Hintertux is a quite village. Bells hanging on cows’ necks enhance its fabulous atmosphere.

I recommend you to avoid Hintertuxer Gletscher in autumn. Often national teams practice here because the glacier has steep slopes. Therefore, necessary trainings before the beginning of the season are performed here.

Ice Palace „Eis Palast“ is another attraction at Hintertux. There are amazing icicles. it takes about an hour to walk through it.
