Tunisia, Sahara – to the Desert

Published: 2025-01-04
Anyone who thinks that the Sahara is just a sandy plain is wrong. I also saw this for myself during my visit to Tunisia. the largest part of the Sahara is rocky, the sandy part is the smaller one. it is good to think about safety and use the services of a professional guide.

With an area of 9,000,000 km², the Sahara Desert is the largest desert in the world. it covers 10 countries, including Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Mauritania, Niger, Chad, Mali and Sudan. a fraction of the entire Sahara extends into Tunisia, about 40,000 km2.

Here you can observe three types of desert - stony hamada, pebble serar and sandy erg. it is the erg stretching from Morocco that is a typical image of the Sahara, which we all know from movies and photos. the most breathtaking sand dunes are located in the area of Ksar Ghilane. the sand moves from one side to the other, so due to the position of the sun it changes its colors. Sometimes it is white or yellow, other times it is reddish. Sandstorms are not uncommon in the Sahara, with huge clouds of dust and sand rising. Climbing such a dune is a very interesting experience. If you want to experience a mirage, the Sahara is an ideal place, you will probably succeed.

Adrenaline driving in a jeep in the sand dunes is more of an experience for men. at times, I had the feeling that we had to turn to the roof with the car. but drivers are true professionals, so there's nothing to worry about. they run the route several times a week, so they know exactly what they can afford. at sunset we sit on a camel and go in the direction of the desert. the unforgettable exotic atmosphere on the back of a desert animal is the right thing to try here. No need to worry, their owners lead them there and back. but we were not lucky enough to meet any real caravan. it is hard to believe that people have really lived here for a long time, especially the Tuareg and Berber tribes.
